The Shops and Establishments Act regulate the payment of wages, hours of work, the interval for rest, opening and closing hours, holidays, overtime work, annual leave, sick leave, casual leave, condition of employment, etc.
Types of Leave under Shops and Establishment Act
Casual Leave (CL)
Casual leaves are the leaves provided for urgent or unforeseen matters where employees need to take a half day or one day off.
Types of casual leaves:
- Half-day leave – Leave taken by the employee for half of the day. ( either in the first half or second half of the day) Generally, the employee takes half-day leaves when they have to go to banks, attend PTMs, or for other personal reasons.
- One-day leave – Leave taken by the employee for one-day to take care of personal chores.
Earned/Privilege Leave (EL)
Earned leave is the leave entitled by the employee since they work with a company. They have generally planned leaves, so the employees need to get approval from their employers in advance unless there is an emergency.
Sick Leave/Medical Leave (SL)
Sick or medical leaves are the leaves entitled when an employee falls ill and cannot come to work.
